It was a beautiful day in Oakland on Friday for Laura and Brian's wedding. Laura was the maid of honor in a wedding I did a few years ago and I was honored she remembered me when it came time to plan her own wedding. Once again I was assisted in the coverage by my good friend Mike Reed.

We met up with Laura for a few portraits as she got ready at the Wyndham Hotel. I love the soft light from north facing windows, but hotel room backgrounds are usually not the best. There are basically three ways I combat cluttered backgrounds: first, place the subject very close to the light source (window) so the background goes very dark because of the difference in exposure. Second, use a very fast prime lenses wide open, I usually use an 85 1.4, to throw the background out of focus, or three, pull the sheer curtain out and use it as an impromptu background. For the portrait of Laura I used two of the techniques and it worked wonderfully.

While I was working with Laura to capture a beautiful portrait, Mike was busy looking for details, moments and other angles. A sharp second photographer is invaluable in expanding coverage. But the key is to find one who sees in a similar style as the prime shooter so there is a continuity and flow to the photography. Since I've worked with Mike for many years some of my vision has rubbed off.

A good photographer is always looking for the right angle and right moment. But it always helps getting lucky, too! Without the light from a guests flash this would have been a nice picture of Laura and her dad walking into the church, but with the small bonus of a beautiful rim light you have a memorable image.

The wedding ceremony was at one of Pittsburgh's most beautiful churches, St. Paul's Cathedral. And once again luck provided us with a better picture. Usually at St. Paul's the alter is bathed in a light so bright it causes a dramatic imbalance of exposure across the scene, however, Friday afternoon the lights did not come on and for the first time I can ever remember I was able to capture the church in its full glory. A 16mm full frame fisheye lens allowed for a full, stylized view of the interior.

After the ceremony we went to a few famous Oakland landmarks for some photos.

Finally, we were ready to go the reception when, all of a sudden, something amazing happened... the SUN came out! Well, we couldn't let that opportunity slip away so it was off for a few more shots. I just LOVE long veils as they float to the ground or get whipped by the wind. A 14mm lens allowed for the expansive view from the camera held overhead at arms length. Over the years I've gotten pretty adept at shooting without looking through the viewfinder. As one of my mentors said, "you must feel the photograph before making the photograph." It's a Zen thing.

One thing I've discovered after 36 years doing this called photojournalism -- amazing images will happen when you just let people be themselves and stop trying to create emotion. It's a wedding. They're in love. Trust me, there's enough emotion to go around, just wait for it.

Finally it was time to head off to The 20th Century Club for the reception. Now I've been to a lot of weddings over the years but this was the first time I had made it to this particular venue. What a treat! This is one of the nicest places I've been in town. First off it's a beautiful facility, but most important the staff was outstanding. Bravo!

It can be a difficult shot to pull off because of lens flare, exposure problems and focus, but when you capture the pure emotion and interaction of the couple during this moment of their wedding it's worth it.

The Battle at F-Stop Ridge

Hey folks,

It's been an absolutely insane week of shooting one project after another from annual reports to a national magazine cover shoot to schools of all kinds. Today is Friday and I'm ending the week on a high by shooting a wedding for a great couple. Laura was the Maid of Honor for a bride I photographed a few years ago and when it became her turn to walk down the aisle she said I was the easiest decision she had to make!

What an amazing wedding yesterday at the Center for the Arts in Pittsburgh! It was such an honor to photograph Meghan and Colin throughout their day. We started early and ended late, but the moments we captured will tell their story. I'm still going through the thousands of images we shot but here are some early standouts. Monday evening I was elated to find out that Leica Fotografie International has accepted two more of my photos in the Master Shots Gallery! These are images Leica has judged to be among the best of all the images submitted from across the globe. This is the third and fourth photo published on their website in two months.

The photographs they selected were from the first tests with my new Leica M9 digital camera. The first image is of my buddy Jim as he enjoys a cigar at Bloom's Cigar on the Southside. The second picture was made right around the corner from the cigar shop of the reflection in the windows of the Iron and Glass Bank. Not a bad 20 minutes of shooting on a freezing Saturday afternoon!

Now I can't wait to do some serious photography with the M9!

Photographers have been capturing images on the street since the beginning of photography. New York City, being the epicenter of the photographic universe, has always been a favorite subject. Of course it doesn't hurt that NYC has a huge and diverse population teeming with characters of all stripes. Just sayin.

Not long ago, Filmmaker Cheryl Dunn was commissioned by the Seaport Museum in New York to create a series of documentary pieces highlighting some of the best photographers working the street today. These are the masters of the art and craft of capturing a fleeting moment. Their eyes are sharp and their reflexes cat like in quickness.

On a personal note, two of the participants in the series, Mary Ellen Mark and Bruce Davidson, were highly influential in the early stages of my career. Their images spoke to me in ways others did not and inspired me to develop my own ability to capture the fleeting moment.

... Note of warning... Ricky Powell is what you might call, a bit rough even for a New Yorker. The film was not edited for polite language so if you're sensitive to profanity you might skip that segment.

Nevada desert

It's way to early in the AM to be up and writing but I couldn't go to sleep without sharing these two photos from last year's trip to Las Vegas I worked up in Lightroom and Photoshop today. With a zillion things on my plate today I just needed to escape into some personal work today to clear my head. I'm taking tomorrow (err, later today) off to attend to a family situation and I just couldn't concentrate on business. Life is like that sometimes.

These photos were fun and challenging to construct. Even though they may seem pretty straightforward, each one required up to 20 layers to produce. There were TONS of curves adjustments, dodging, burning, cloning, and in the top photo I even moved mountains. Literally, I moved the bottom portion of the scene closer to the clouds. Better life thru Photoshop. But, and this is to me the key, after all that work on the computer, the photographs still look natural.

A creative director and friend told me a few weeks ago the reason she likes my work so much is that it never "looks digital." By that she meant the super sharp hyper reality high dynamic range images so often seen today. Oh don't get me wrong, I've done those too. But afterward they left me cold and empty. That's just me. I've seen examples where they look pretty cool, but I've seen more that just looked super sharp and hyper real with no emotion whatsoever. Call me old school but I want feeling in my images. I want someone to look at my photographs and feel like they are there, or could be there, seeing it as I did. But that's just me. Others have their own style, and that's cool, too. That's the beauty of photography. To each their own... vision.

Color, light and gesture | Jay Maisel

About a year ago I was in Las Vegas for the annual WPPI convention. For those not familiar that's the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International. Good group. To my delight and surprise Jay Maisel was on the roster of speakers. I say surprise because Jay is not a wedding photographer (which naturally dominated this convention). Jay is, however, a legend.

As one of the most famous color photographers ever to pick up a camera Jay has influenced generations of image makers with his rich, powerful images and his delightfully colorful persona. You see, Jay is a New Yorker in the truest sense of the word, that means he can be a bit crusty at times. But that's all part of his charm. For me, he's Knute Rockne and Yoda rolled into one -- an inspiration and a fountain of wisdom.

One of the most important things Jay explained was he never goes out to take pictures. He doesn't have to, he always has a camera with him. When you always carry a camera you are always looking for pictures so you never have to go out to make pictures. Makes perfect sense. Always carry a camera. Check.

The other thing he stressed was the three building blocks in photography -- color, light and gesture. By using these three simple elements your work will stand out. Color, obvious. Light, early morning or late evening to bring out texture, shadow and contrast. And gesture, that subtle or not so subtle movement to add life to your images.

After just an hour with Jay I was so charged up I couldn't wait to hit the Vegas strip and make images. That excitement has carried me throughout the last year, and with luck, for the rest of my life. Jay runs a week long workshop from his New York studio. It's not expensive, it's priceless.

10 Things I've learned in 2010 (in no particular order)

As the new year is just hours old I'm reflecting back on the year gone by. What I did right, and what I did not quite right. Hopefully I've grown as a person and a photographer. I'm grateful for both. And hopefully I've learned a few things along the way. That's how we grow. To keep learning, every day, every week, every year. These are a few things that I've learned, or re-learned, in 2010.

1. It's darn hard to explain to someone how to "feel" the moment is right to make an exposure. Everyone wants instruction in absolute measure to get quantitative results every time. Photography doesn't work that way. Even in digital. Maybe somewhere it does, but not here, not with my eye, my heart or my soul.

2. Old friends are treasures and new friends are wonderful gifts. Thankfully in 2010 I reconnected with some people that I fell out of touch with for years and made many new beautiful friendships.

3. Making images is as fun today as it was the first time I borrowed up my dad's Konica camera to photograph a lunar eclipse a very long time ago. Every single day I wake up filled with excitement and passion for this amazing profession.

4. You can't please everyone... especially in photography. Therefore, I will make pictures my way. Some people will love them, others won't. Some things never change.

5. There are positive people and negative people in the world. I will spend my time with the former and stay away from the latter.

6. I still love film. I love the discipline it requires to shoot only 36 images a roll, the technical skill it demands to focus (manually) and expose properly and the resulting tones it delivers. There is nothing like it anywhere. You cannot replicate the luscious tonality of a black and white negative in digital no matter how much you try. Even though I've been shooting digitally for all of the last decade, I am dedicating myself to using film for a great number of personal projects in the next decade.

7. Doing personal work clears my mind and sharpens me for commissioned work. I will do more personal projects this year. I'm working on a few things now that will come to fruition in 2011.

8. Leica cameras are the best cameras in the world (IMO). They are, as they've always been, an extension of my hand, mind and spirit. There is something magical about them. I see differently when I use a Leica -- clearer, more precise, more compositional. They "feel" right. Every lens they ever made sees the word in its own unique manner. I had the pleasure of using a 3.5 cm lens for a few shots this year. The lens was made in the late 1930 and created images I can only describe as "poetic." I want to do more pictures with that kind of glass.

9. I love light and creating beautiful light makes my heart sing. Even though a lot of my work is done using available light, I really enjoy bringing out my own set of lights and sculpting the scene. I miss it. I miss big softboxes, strip lights, my beauty dish and all those wonderful grid spots I so often used. At the end of 2010 I invested in a couple of octabanks and a new powerful battery operated flash unit. I'm looking forward to shooting with it a lot in the new year. It's going to be a great piece of gear for on-location portraiture.

10. You have to dream big. You have to work hard. You have to eat, sleep and breath this thing called photography to get to the next level. It's about immersion. No excuses. You just have to do it. All the time. Shoot, shoot and shoot some more.

Well that's about it for 2010. Now it's time to get to work on 2011. A new year brings the hope for great things, new challenges, and with luck, a few rewards along the way. I'm looking forward to one heck of a great time this year as things unfold. Stay tuned. Thanks.

The death of Kodachrome

It's now official, Kodachrome succumbed to progress yesterday, December 30, 2010, as the last rolls of the most famous film ever produced were processed in Parsons, Kansas and the machines silenced forever. For 75 years Kodak produced Kodachrome. But progress marched forward and with the digital revolution the need for film diminished. Kodachrome, alas, was destined for it's great demise.

Snapshots to magazine spreads to advertising assignments all were glorified with Kodachromes bright, vivid colors. It was a different kind of film in that the color dyes were added after the film was processed, which gave it a unique palette. Reds were accentuated, blues popped and greens exploded. As Paul Simon sang, it made all the world a sunny day.

Kodachrome was not for the faint of heart or the sloppy technician. There was no margin of error. Your exposure had to be 100% on the mark or the slide was too dark and muddy or blown out too bright. But when it was right there was nothing like it.

One of my first national award winning images was shot on Kodachrome 25 of a skydiving exhibition. The jumper wore all blue against a deep blue sky. His parachute was also blue with one panel of red. That scene was MADE for Kodachrome. Printed on another long since gone material, Cibachrome, the image was so color intensive it almost hurt the eyes! The PPofA judges scored the print a 98 out of 100, talking two points away for the edge treatment of the print. This was back when it was customary to tape the edge of your print using black tape. My tape was deemed to perfectly straight, even though I used a straight edge as a guide. Still, not bad for a 18 year old kid.

I have that slide to this day, and to this day the colors are as vivid as the moment it was exposed. That was another quality of Kodachrome, it's nearly archival. Images from the very beginning, 75 years ago, are as bright and rich as they were the day they were exposed. Try to say that about digital images in 75 years, if you can even figure out how to access them seven and a half decades from now. Or even 10 or twenty years down the road.

But progress marches on and with each step we take, we lose some in the process. RIP old friend, you will be missed by many.

As we draw 2010 to a close it's time to look back, reflect and thank everyone who has allowed me into their lives this year. It's been a pleasure and an honor to meet you and record one of the most special and important days of your lives.

As you may have noticed, this blog has been pretty quiet lately. It was a busy December. Very busy December. Thanks for my incredible album company we were able to design, print and deliver books right up to the week before Christmas. Our last delivery day felt like I was working at a deli counter as people came in and went out one after the next. It was a very good, warm feeling.

There are some big changes and new challenges on the horizon in 2011. Looking ahead I see a world of opportunities blossoming. Things are taking shape in many directions and I'm thrilled. It's going to be an amazing year.

May the new year bring to you all the joy, happiness, love and prosperity you desire.

This morning I was pleased to discover Leica Camera has published two of my images in the gallery section of their website. These are images they have judged to be among the best of the all images submitted from across the globe.

This image is one of the two. The subject is my good friend Harold Betters, legendary jazz trombonist from Connellsville, PA. We were doing some test shots in my daylight studio. The photo was made using a Leica MP camera, Summilux 50mm f/1.4 lens and Tri-X film.

It's Thanksgiving week. Today is my last day in the office till Saturday. I'm going to do something totally different, totally wild. This week I'm pulling a few odd pieces of gear out of the cabinet and going wild. I'm shooting film. Yeah, I know, I've been doing that here and there with my Leica M cameras. But this is different. It's going to be an old SLR system (for those who wonder that means Single Lens Reflex). No auto focus. Gotta have an eye ball in there, and fingers to turn the focus ring. No motor drive. Gotta have a thumb to advance the film and cock the shutter. No zoom either. Just a simple body with a few simple lenses. Three. Just three lenses -- 25, 50 and 135. Oh there are a few more, but that's enough. More than enough.

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone and remember to give thanks for what you have, who you have with you and what the future may hold. It's a beautiful life. Enjoy.

Light Up Night Pittsburgh

Friday was Pittsburgh's 50th annual Light Up Night celebration so at the last minute we decided to travel in to join the fun.

After moving across a sea of bodies crushed in the bottle neck of Market Square, we moved to a more tranquil position next to the Fred Rogers statue for the annual Light Up Night fireworks display. It had been many years since I photographed fireworks on Light Up Night so I was quite surprised when I realized they moved the firing position! No wonder it was so sparse where we were! I'm sure it happened ages ago, but like I said, it had been ages since I did this event.

None the less, the shot worked and we were no longer getting stepped on by scores of people. All in all a fun and successful night. There is no place on earth like Pittsburgh when they turn on the lights!

Tech notes:

Camera: Nikon D90

Lens: Nikon 12-24 mm f/4 (16 mm used)

Exposure: 0.4 second @ f/4.5

ISO: 200

Tripod: none

As we were getting ready to go I decided I was going to shoot with just one Leica MP and a couple of lenses (35 Summicron & 50 Summilux). My film choice would be Fuji 800 Pro. Well, that didn't quite work out very well as fireworks approached. I knew we were going to be too close to get in the city and fireworks. Luckily, Toni brought her digital camera and, in her usual gracious manner, allowed me to use it.

Because I had assumed the crowds would be massive (they were) I decided not to lug around a tripod. Unfortunately that meant I didn't have solid three legged support from my camera. This is where you need to improvise, adapt and overcome the situation at hand. To do so, I simply used the railing around where we were shooting to brace the camera. I knew using this method I could shoot as low as 1/4 second with a reasonable expectation of getting a sharp image.

To reduce noise in the image I selected a low ISO (200). A faster ISO would allow me to hand hold the camera easier, but the price of a faster shutter speed would also have been shorter tracks from the fireworks. From past experience I knew I wanted as long of a trail as possible in my situation. Next time a tripod will go in my car regardless!

Setting the appropriate f stop for correct exposure on the buildings and it was all just a matter of timing the release to the bursts of fireworks. In such an uncontrolled environment you shoot a lot and hope you get one frame you like.

Saturday I had the pleasure of photographing Miss M in a private commission session.

Every year I do a select number of private commission portraits for high school age people wanting something unique and artistic. I don't like to call it a "senior portrait" or "high school picture" just a "private commission portrait session." To me there is a difference. It's not volume work. Everything is customized to the individual client. As I tell everyone, "you won't be hugging any trees or sitting on big numbers." The work is done on location or in my second floor urban grunge daylight studio. Occasionally we'll shoot against a seamless, depending on what we collaborate to create. Collaboration is of utmost importance. I like people with ideas and passion. It's so much more fun and rewarding to create images of excited, creative people.

Because my work is so customized to the individual client I rarely book multiple shoots in a day. I want to work in the best light. Usually that occurs once a day so booking more than one session on location is to possibly compromise the quality of my images. I won't compromise my work, period, so a generous amount is mandatory.

The portrait shown here was made near the end of the day. The sun was low in the sky. A California Sunbounce reflector kicked in just enough light to add dimension and provide a clean catch-light in her eyes. I like her expression - soft, yet confident, someone ready to take on the world. In post I used custom mix in Nik Silver Effect Pro to create the overall tone and tonality. Nik software is simply the finest black and white conversion program out there today. I'm a huge black and white fan, and I still shoot film at times for "the look" but Nik nails it so well I hardly ever "need" my film bodies anymore.

You'd think, judging from this blog, I've taken an extended leave of absence. Not hardly. October was a total whir wind. It blew by so quickly I barely had time to enjoy the (albeit limited) color of fall. Weddings, commercial assignments and private commission work kept me shooting almost every day. When I wasn't behind the camera I was in front of the computer trying to knock out the work to my clients. It was exhausting, but exhilarating at the same time.

I love being busy. Always have. Some photographers are like thoroughbred race horses. They like staying in the barn till the big race. Me, I've always likened myself to the plow horse. Put me in the field every day and just stand back and let me work. I'll get er done. Such was October. Plowed many a field both here and on the far side of the state.

Unfortunately (for the blog) much of my work is of a commercial nature. Art directors and commercial clients sometimes don't like pictures posted before their projects are released to the public. They're funny that way. They like to keep things under wraps till they're finished. Also, because so much of my work is project specific it sometimes loses meaning out of context. So a picture that might look mundane or routine as a stand alone may be exactly what the client needs to communicate their message. The total (package) is greater than the sum of the individual parts. Such is life. Still, a cool picture is in most cases still a cool picture.

Luckily there were a lot of weddings, too. Unfortunately there were a lot of weddings, too! Those took some time last month to not only shoot, but to process. Most are out now so the results will soon be on the blog. Backwards for sure, but I felt I needed to get the pictures to the couples first since I was running so far behind. Only seemed fair.

An open letter to my colleagues - i.e. newbie and part time photographers

This year I've heard from many established photographers about the increasing number of rules imposed by on them by various churches and places of worship when trying to photograph weddings. I too have had to sign more photographer agreements this year than anytime in the past. What's it all mean? It means this "profession" is being infested by a bunch of stink bugs - photographers who may talk professional, but act like boorish amateurs. People who jumped into the field with little or no training and even less experience of working along side an established professional. It also means that common sense is not very common.

Instant career, just add digital. Across the country legions of soccer moms, unemployed folks and people who 'just love taking pictures' are buying the latest Canon or Nikon DSLR and instantly proclaiming themselves "professional photographers" because their pictures are "real good." They know this because so many of their friends and relatives have told them so. Or they took a (single) photography course in high school, college, the community college and receive a positive grade (and excellent feedback from a teacher) therefore they know what they're doing.

Book knowledge does not equal practical experience. Gone it seems are the days of the apprenticeship in photography. I was lucky. When I knew this was what I wanted to do for my life, at 15 years old, I found a photographer who would take me under his wing and allow me to learn. I didn't ask for money, I was seeking something way more valuable than a paycheck, I was seeking knowledge and experience. I know today is different than yesterday, people today have bills to pay and must eat. I guess that means "back then" we didn't have bills, everyone just traded rocks, and we all foraged for our dinner. Come on! What is the #1 difference between now and then? Attitude. I lived at home, did just enough other things to get gas money and ate as cheaply as humanly possible to exist. I came to my work every day with two important items - an open mind and a closed mouth. I saw, I learned and I didn't expound my opinion.

So what's any of this mean to the church rules? Just this, without proper mentoring, practical experience, common sense (which is anything but common) and a humble attitude people are going to do very stupid things. I make it a point to talk to the officiant, often times at the rehearsal, always in the morning of the wedding. I usually ask what the most egregious thing he's ever seen a photographer do at a wedding. When I first started I was usually shocked, now I'm just angry at the insensitivity, unprofessionalism and arrogance some people with cameras possess. These are the Poser Professionals. They talk the talk but don't have a clue how to walk the walk. Or worse, don't care to learn.

So, in an attempt to impart just a sliver of knowledge, although I know you cannot teach common sense, I've developed my own set of rules for photographer conduct. It's not complete, but it will at least get you through a wedding without causing any additional damage to the profession.

So here goes, in no particular order of importance:

1). Dress so you don't embarrass the couple who hired you. I'm not suggesting a suit, but please, cut off shorts with ragged edges, t-shirts (plain, pocket or graphic), sandals and jeans of any kind (yeah, even designer) is NOT appropriate dress to photograph a wedding.

2). It's not NASCAR, turn off the 8 frame per second motor drive during the service. The only time I might shoot a burst is during the first kiss if something unusual happens, otherwise, single frame, please.

3). During the service if you need to move to the other side, go all the way around from the back of the church, don't take a short cut by crossing in front of the alter.

4). If you think you need a higher angle, go to the choir loft or lift the camera over your head, do NOT stand on the pews. Come on, a little common sense here - one, you could fall; two, you could knock the pews over (yeah, they're not always bolted down); three, it's just inappropriate!!!

5). If you think you need a lower angle, set the camera on the floor, don't lay down in the middle of the aisle. Come on! It's a digital camera. Shoot a few frames and chimp to see if you framed the shot correctly. If not, shoot a few more frames after making corrections. Laying down on the floor of the church, in the middle of the aisle is, again, inappropriate.

6). When the officiant says "Let us pray" that does not mean it's time for a six-frame-machine-gun-like burst from you, or even a single click. Respect the reverence of the moment and keep your camera at bay. Regardless of your personal faith, it would hurt you to say a little prayer for your couple either.

7). In case you didn't know, the alter is a Sacred place, don't climb up there for a different angle or to shoot over the shoulder of the officiant. Respect. Common sense. And yes, time and time again this is one of the most egregious actions officiants recount.

8). When you are told you have 30 minutes for pictures, check your watch and wrap it up in no more than 30 minutes. The reason most churches have a time limit is because there's another event happening right away, either another wedding or a worship service. Be respectful of what is coming next and the people who must prep the church.

9). Remember you are working FOR your couple and their family, not for yourself. The wants and needs of the customer comes first, what you want comes second. The service is important to your couple and their family, respect their faith and respect the Church. You may not be back their again, but they will. And you never know, if you act with respect you just might get invited back, too.

These opinions are based on my personal beliefs, common sense and several decades of experience. If you are newer to this profession I hope you will consider them as your actions have consequences greater than yourself.

Neo-Victorian Steam Punk Wedding | Latrobe Wedding Photography | Laura & Mike's Wedding

On August 14th I had the pleasure of photographing the most unique wedding I've ever experienced -- Laura and Mike's Neo-Victorian Steampunk themed wedding. This is what happens when two self-professed geeks marry.

It was a great wedding and reception at the uber cool DiSalvo's Station in downtown Latrobe, PA. Located UNDER the railroad tracks you could hear the trains roll above all night long. It was absolutely perfect!

So what is Steam Punk? As I was told, think Jules Verne, or better still, the movie The Wild, Wild West. Gears, clocks, wheels and of course, Victorian dress (bowlers for the men. And facial hair.). Naturally the full explanation is more involved, but you get the idea.

It can be crazy at times but I love the variety. One type of photography plays off the other. Regardless of the commission, for me it's about seeing the moment and working with the light, color and composition. It's as simple and as complex as that. Feeling the image in your heart, mind and soul. Romancing the photograph. Relating to the picture on some level. Making it breathe.

Reflections on Being

As the sun broke the horizon of houses to my East this morning I sat savoring my first cup of coffee while completing my goal list for the day. Weather permitting, I take time in the early morning to sit outside and ponder the coming day, thinking, planning and reflecting.

While I wrote I noticed a tiny grasshopper making a daring effort to scale a foam covered pipe that is attached to the back of my studio. The pipe runs from the air conditioning unit on the ground up the wall about 14 feet and into the building, a gargantuan distance for such a small creature. This diminutive guy was climbing the pipe for who knows what reason, but he was doing it, step by step by step. As I watched, he would pause, presumably to rest, then begin again slowly and carefully making another step toward the top.

This fellow made me think. We all have our own struggles in life, our own climb and our own goals. Do we have the perseverance of a grasshopper? Can we keep going, keep struggling, keep climbing even when we cannot see the end? It's easy to give up and accept less than what we deserve. The grasshopper could have stopped at any time, but he didn't. He kept moving ever so slowly, changing position around the pipe for better footing as he climbed. When we need to adjust our direction, and everyone does at times, do we keep on moving?

But we're people, not grasshoppers. Sometimes we need help. Sometimes we need to be pointed, or repointed, toward our goal. On August 8-11 Skip Cohen is presenting the first ever edition of Skip's Summer School in Las Vegas. In just two and a half day you'll be exposed to 15 of the greatest image makers and marketing experts in the world. These folks will energize you, inspire you and keep you pointed on task to reach your goal, or help you climb to new heights beyond your current imagination. You owe it to yourself to take the time to learn from the best. Flights to Vegas are cheap. The workshop is incredibly cheap. Even the rooms are cheap. The experience, however, will be priceless.

Be a grasshopper, go to Skip's Summer School and climb to the top.

Matthew Jordan Smith | Creative Experience Seminar

On July 19th and 20th I had the extreme pleasure to attend the Matthew Jordan Smith Creative Experience Seminar in Akron, Ohio. Matthew is a world renown photographer who's client list reads like a who's who of the fashion, beauty and celebrity world -- Tyra Banks, Vanessa Williams, Oprah and Aretha Franklin, just to name a few. Most important, he's one of the warmest, most giving individuals I've had ever met. In two days he shared so much of his knowledge and insight into this business it was at times hard to keep up with notes.

Some colleagues asked why I went to a workshop when I've been shooting for so long. Simply, you never stop learning. Sure, some things Matthew discussed were not new, but there still were many things I learned for the first time and even those things I knew, it was good to hear them again. Everyone has something they can learn and adapt to what they do or how they work regardless of how long they've been making photos. It was a privilege to meet Matthew and a joy to be able to call him a new friend.

One of the fun aspects of the seminar was the model shoot. Rebecca Shore is a model from the Cleveland area that was hired for the day. Matthew found her on ModelMayhem.com. While everyone started with the typical "girl on white background shots", Matthew stressed to be creative with locations. I found the location for my photos in the men's room! You never know where you find the right light and location.

Of course, no fashion shoot is ever complete without a great make-up artist on your T.E.A.M. (Together Each Achieves More) and Heather Smith was absolutely the BEST! If you're looking to hire an uber talented make-up professional you can reach her at hsmithmua@yahoo.com.

I would be very remiss if I didn't mention one of the greatest aspects of a seminar -- meeting other professionals. This was a small seminar (by design) so everyone got a lot of one-on-one attention. Everyone is now connected to each other and I suspect many good friendships will form.

And a very special shout out has to go to one person from the class, Chris Blank. Because of an out of town photo assignment I had to leave the seminar early on Tuesday. In my rush to get out the door I unknowingly dropped my legal pad full of notes. Chris rescued my papers and immediately sent them out to me. Thank you, Chris!

It was a hot and steamy day, not a day you wanted to spend too much time outside. So rather than battle the elements, Stacey and Jim decided to have their engagement photos made inside the place they first met -- the Titlow Tavern and Grill in downtown Uniontown. A good choice it was! Not only was it air conditioned but the light was absolutely lovely bouncing around inside the early 1900's building. What a fun day it was photographing Lindsay and Justin's wedding on June 26th! After a beautiful ceremony at Library Baptist Church we headed to the reception at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland, which was very fitting since Justin is a decorated Veteran, having served in Iraq with the National Guard.

To maximize time at their reception, Lindsay and Justin decided to do a Day After session. It was awesome to be able to create a set of special images for them without the time constraints of the wedding day. For two hours we bopped around Pittsburgh shooting fun pictures in interesting locations.

Sorry folks, it's been too long since I last blogged. It happens sometime, especially in the summer, but not for the reasons you might think. Yes, it's been very busy and the wedding season is in full swing. More important however, it's the time for education, reflection and growth. Everyone needs those things and photographers maybe more than others.

This year there has been a lot of advancements in technology that require study and practice. Adobe has come out with revolutionary advancements in Photoshop CS-5 and Lightroom 3. These programs are the backbone of a photography business today so if you don't learn anything else you must learn these two. Using the programs for the first time while you're working on a client's job is just not done. They should work fine, but, as a professional, you don't take that chance so time is devoted to learning and experimenting.

Reflection -- quietly sitting and thinking about life and what path you are walking. Taking notes. Working on a plan. Often overlooked in our busy bustling lives, quiet time is really a necessity. To move forward you need a plan. Life without forward motion is not living. Read that in a fortune cookie I think. A good one, three, five and ten year plan will keep you going. But it takes time and effort to work on those. They don't happen overnight.

Growth -- expanding ones world through any one of a number of means. Reading, listening to music, travel, exercise, learning something new or going back to something old. Sometimes the fastest way forward is to step back, shake the dust off and rediscover what's really important in your life. Returning to shooting film has been one of the greatest growth experiences I've had in years. Going backward has catapulted me forward in my vision, style and enjoyment of the craft.

But now it's time to catch up on what's been really happening, the cool couples I've photographed, the exciting projects I've been doing commercially and the press I've recently received!

Film Is Not Dead | Personal projects | Pittsburgh Lifestyle Portraiture

New images from some recent projects flexing my film muscles. The question continues to come up... why shoot film? I continue to answer, why not? There is a different look to film and I like it. And the reaction I've received from people who have actually seen the work in print is 100% positive. So again, I say, why not!

So am I going to stop shooting digital? Of course not, don't be silly. If all I did was personal work or weddings or lifestyle portraiture then maybe I would think about a total conversion, but since the bulk of my work still rests squarely in the commercial realm it's impossible not to shoot digital. Commercial deadlines today are way to short to allow film to come back from my lab on the other side of the country. Heck, in many cases, I barely have time to return to the studio to process the digital files before the clients needs the finals! Nope, we live in a digital age, but that doesn't mean we can't go "back to the future" once in a while.

Besides the look of film, another thing I enjoy is the size of the camera - film bodies, especially Leica M cameras and lenses are smaller thus making it easier to carry around for a long day and allowing me to more easily keep the connection with my (human) subject.

Furthermore, working with film, especially with Leica cameras, requires keen technical prowess. Going old school you don't have autofocus, there is no program mode to set your exposure (heck with the cameras I use there isn't even a built in light meter) and you don't have hundreds of frames on a single card so there's no banging away, hoping one picture works. You have 36 exposures so you have to make them work. Working with film separates the pros from the rest of the pack.

And finally, for me, it's fun. And what's the point if you're not having a great time? Happy photographers produce happy work : )

Annual Report Photography in Pittsburgh | Western PA School for Blind Children

For the third year in a row I have had the extreme honor and pleasure to photograph the annual report for the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children. What I witness during my time at the school is humbling and uplifting in ways I cannot describe. The staff there are Angles, doing work that is above and beyond words. And most importantly, the children are incredible. These are very special people - staff and students. Here is a tiny glimpse into their world.

Nothing does that better than nature, and specifically, water, so Saturday we took a day trip to Ohiopyle in south west PA. It was beautiful! And of course it made for some wonderful photos, too. And yes, to me making pictures on a "day off" is relaxing : )

Some days everything just comes nicely into place. While doing a rapid fire series of portraits of young students the other day, everything just fit. All the children were great and easy to work with. This young man in particular was wonderful - he naturally just learned against the lockers, and did it in good light. What more can you ask, well except for that beautiful expression on his face. Life is good.

Chicago Wedding | Lisa and Brian | Chicago Pen Show

May 1st was a day of firsts. It was the "official" first wedding of my 2010 season. It was also my first wedding in the Chicago area. And, it was the first time a couple were ever married at a pen show.

Pen show? Yes, gather several hundred avid collectors of new and vintage writing instruments in one room and you have a pen show. Chicago is one of the oldest and biggest shows in the country. The couple, Lisa and Brian, are collectors who met through the hobby so it was only natural for them to be wed where they met.

Exchanging the vows, quite literally.

This is the pen set that started the romance. Lisa bought one of the pens from an Ebay seller. Brian, found the other pen, through a private seller. At the time, neither knew the other one had the "missing" half of the set. The odds of two collectors each buying half of an engraved set without the others knowledge must be huge. If so, what are the odds of those same people meeting, falling in love and "discovering" they each had half of a set. Almost chilling when you think about the odds.

Location, location, location

Today starts a three week stint of out of town location work. Well, not 100%, but each week I'm going somewhere new shooting something for a few days. Gone are the extended travel assignments of times ago, at least for most of us. Regardless of the length of the trip, the challenges are still there because once you're out of the studio, you're away from most of your arsenal of equipment. So what do I take to keep things running smoothly? Here's a rundown of my travel gear:

• Nikon D700 bodies (two, one with the vertical grip for 8 fps)

• Nikon D300s body

• Nikon 17-35 f2.8 zoom

• Nikon 24-70 f2.8 zoom

• Nikon 70-200 f2.8 zoom

• Nikon 50 f1.4 G

• Nikon 85 f1.4

• Nikon 12-24 f/2 DX

• Nikon 70-300 f3.5

• Nikon TC-14 tele-converter

• Nikon SB-900 flash units (two)

• Nikon SB-26 flash unit (w/built in slave eye)

• Nikon Commander Unit

• Sandisk 16 gig CF cards (10)

• Sandisk 16 gig SDHC cards (2, as emergency back up)

• Sandisk 8 gig CF cards (8)

• Macintosh laptop w/external hard drives for backing up files

Along with this "basic" kit I also pack a Manfrotto mono-pod; Gitzo tripod; Honl flash grids, snoots, gels; Manfrotto light stands; mini softbox; shoot thru umbrellas and a few Cliff bars for on the go energy. Oh, and a couple of boxes of Starbucks instant coffee, too! Can't forget the coffee!!

This may sound like a lot to some people, but for me it's just the basic kit I feel comfortable carrying in order to be ready for anything a client may throw at me at any time. This kit also provides one more important element - back up. With multiple bodies available there is less chance for something going wrong. And by duplicating focal lengths you're covered no matter what happens. As a profession this is the ONLY way to work. The 12-24 lens covers basically the same angle of view as the 17-35. That's an important lens range for me hence the duplication. The 70-300 is my back up for the 70-200 for the same reason.

I carry a D300s as a third body rather than another D700 because the former has a DX sensor, hence all focal lengths are multiplied by a factor of 1.5. This is extremely useful when photographing sports - with the D300s and 70-200 combo I have an automatic 300mm f2.8 lens at a fraction of the weight! Add the 1.4 tele-converter and that makes it a 420 mm f4. Nikon glass will allow me to do this and create razor sharp images, my former system would not.

To transport all this stuff my lighting gear is packed into a Lightware 1440 case. Cameras travel in a ThinkTank roller. On site I'll move most of the camera gear into a shoulder bag for easier transport by my assistant. I'll carry two or three cameras with various lenses to work.

Now all we need is good weather!

Technology Rising

Adobe CS-5 really is an amazing tool.

How amazing? Now you don't need to compose properly. Just fix it with content aware filter. Awkward movements can be corrected using the rubber monkey tool (or whatever it's called). Bad exposure cause bad noise, what noise, it's fixed with a couple of new sliders. No need for HDR software, have that too, and it looks better than the stand alone piece. Didn't do an HDR exposure set? No worries, we have a filter for that now!

I'm not sure I'm happy about all this new technology or saddened. Maybe a little of both. For good photographers there is no doubt this is a great tool. But at the same time, where is craftsmanship headed? Will getting it right at the moment of exposure count for anything? Does it now? Does the "fix it in Photoshop" ideology permeate our vocation so pervasively that a new legion of sloppy image makers will become the next generation of superstars?

But there's a backwash from all this technology - film sales are on the increase. Yes, film. Fuji film reported an increase in film sales last quarter.

Monday afternoon I had a lovely conversation with an old friend, Ken Hansen. Ken and I go way back, 30 some years back, to a time when he was a major photo equipment dealer in New York City and I was a young buck photojournalist set out to change the world. Then, like now, Ken was a well house of information. Ken still sells cameras, albeit at a much smaller scale today. He said he's recently noticed an uptick in film camera sales. "All those guys who went digital are buying back their old film cameras. They're getting fed up with digital."

I don't see a celluloid revolution starting any time soon. We're not going backwards. Hardly. That Jeanie left the bottle a long time ago. But knowing, just for yourself, that you nailed it at the moment of exposure - no need to fix it later - means something. It's satisfying on a very personal level that you got it right straight away. It feels pure. And the workflow is beautiful - unload camera, put film in box, mail to lab, sit down, enjoy life and wait for prints to come.

Several years ago, back in the Photoshop 5.0 days, I was working on an architectural shoot. View camera set, all lines corrected for proper perspective and I'm about to make the series of exposures I stopped. One more job to do first - clean the parking lot in front of the building of paper cups. As soon as I started to pick up the trash the art director stopped me and asked what the heck I was doing, that could all be fixed in Photoshop! I asked him very nicely how much digital retouching this parking lot would cost. "Only $200" he said. "I'll tell you what," I said, "I'll PRE-touch the photo for only $100, saving you half of your RE-touch budget." He looked at me puzzled and asked "what do you mean PRE-touch?" I smiled and said, "I'm going to pick up all these damn cups so I don't have them on film!" The moral of the story - why spend so much time doing post when you can get it right the first time.

Film or digital capture doesn't matter. It's how you shoot that does matter.

A day in the life of a family - Russian Orthodox Baptism

Saturday I had the honor of documenting an important moment in a family's life - the Baptism of their son, Geoffrey, at St. Vladimir's Russian Orthodox Church. This is the second Baptism they commissioned me to cover. Three years ago their daughter, Anna, was Baptized.

I love creating picture stories for families. The 'day in the life' type work fits perfectly with my background as a newspaper and magazine photojournalist. I capture moments, emotion and action as it unfolds. In the end it's not just a record of an event, it's a slice of life preserved for generations to look back on and remember. This summer I will do a number of private commissions of this type of work.

Before the actual Baptism took place I set up a portable studio in the Church basement and made a series of formal family portraits. Because everyone came from out of town it was important to this family to have these pictures. They will make a nice section of their book - a formal record of everyone attending.

Thank you everyone for putting your trust in me to capture your very special day. It was an honor and a pleasure to be witness to such a beautiful ceremony. God Bless.

Sunrise is so early

3:30 AM my alarm sounded, shaking me from a deep slumber. Too early for most normal people, but I've never claimed normality.

Sunrise shoot today, time to get up and get ready to flip the creative switch. Sunrise light is beautiful, albeit awful early. Such is our burden as image makers.

Got up, tried not to drown in the shower, swilled down two cups of black coffee strong enough to jump start an Cummins engine. Awake, finally. Cameras in hand I hit the street.

Timing was off. Dang. So on the way to the location I did a bit of early morning shopping. Wal-Mart. Open 24 hours. Yeah. No time to do this during "regular" hours so lucky me. People inside reminded me of a George Romero movie. They looked worse than I felt.

Arrived too early anyway, still dark. Time to scout. In the dark? OK, time to eat a little breakfast. Awake, awake at last!

Morning light is good. Still too early though. Contrails are just crazy cool. A few frames bracket for the HDR and I'm done. Wandered a bit more and shot some other things but nothing struck me as nice as what I pre-visualized in the HDR shot. All in all a good mornings shoot and a well deserved nap this afternoon.

Make a simple picture

When was the last time you simplified your shooting and used only one lens? Not a zoom, either, a regular one focal length lens. How about putting on a regular 50 mm lens and use you mind, eyes and feet to create some images this weekend? Use your mind to pre-visualize the image, your eyes to find the photo and your feet to "zoom" in and out for best composition. Make pictures simply, but don't make simple photos -- work at it, compose, see, stretch and push yourself to see out of the box. The Pittsburgh weather this weekend is suppose to be totally awesome. Take a photo walk, even if it's only in your back yard, and make some fresh images. It's spring, time for life to begin anew. Make it your visual life, too.

New stuff arrived!

I'm SO excited today! My UPS and USPS delivery guys came to my door back to back this morning bringing all kinds of cool stuff.

First is my new 90 mm f/2 Summicron lens for my fast growing Leica system. YEAH!!! This lens ROCKS. It's super small, insanely sharp and will be a pure joy to use. I had an older version years ago and since that time they've improved it many times over. I can't wait to shoot my portrait job this afternoon with it... on FILM!!

The second arrival is a new hard bound portfolio book from my professional lab, White House Color (WHCC). It's a commercial book, not a wedding portfolio, designed for a specific proposal I'm work on. Wish me luck, it could be a great job with a brand new client!!

I can see many possibilities for this book in my wedding work and I'll be getting more samples soon. This book has pages that lay flat and are thicker than run of the mill press printed albums. The color is so rich and the pictures so sharp they literally pop off the page. Very impressive indeed!

What makes a professional photographer?

On a new photography board there has recently been quite an outpouring of emotion regarding the world of wedding photography, and photographers specifically. Some of the discussion and posting has been insightful while others are just plain crude and insulting, often directed a few select individuals. I don't condone finger pointing or calling someone out. It's not my job nor my business to be the truth police. I figure the market will do that all by itself. If they truly are a genius-artist as they seem to claim they will be rewarded, but if they are the charlatan others allege, they will be found out and punished accordingly.

The discussion primarily focuses on the tsunami of inexperienced photographers who make outrageous claims and do major sales (snow) jobs to unknowing and/or unsuspecting people. These folks are blowing things way out of proportion to their relative importance, especially in relation to being named 'best of' this or that or awards from inconsequential sources to become larger than life, or "Rock Stars" as the profession terms them today. Experienced photographers know most of that kind of "notoriety" should be taken with a grain of salt. Some photographers choose to use it in their marketing while others just smile and say thanks.

The most heinous allegation is centered on workshops this legion of inexperience offers (for money) with little actual experience as a professional photographer. So who is to judge how much experience is needed to teach? How much knowledge do you need above your pupils to expound wisdom? But the biggest question is...

So what makes a professional photographer?

In the most base sense, anyone who accepts money for a photograph is technically a "professional" photographer. The more accepted standard is someone who makes 80% of their income from photography. That means a full time job, not someone just working on the weekend or in their off hours. So assuming you're by definition a professional, does that automatically make you qualified to teach?

I remember when I turned "pro" many long years ago. To make a long story short, I photographed a high school football game for my then local daily newspaper. After seeing the results of my efforts the managing editor dug in his wallet, handed me a $5.00 bill and said "Congratulations kid, you're now a professional photographer!" I was 15 and the picture I sold was taken from the second roll of film I had ever shot in my life. It was the beginning of my career. From that day forward I never worked at any other job than photography.

So was I really a pro photographer at that moment? Technically, yes, I was paid for my efforts. But was my effort really professional or just luck? Yes, to both. To be successful in this business I think you always have to have a little of both - luck and skill. Doors open and doors close in life, it's the wise man (or woman) who knows which ones to go through.

Charles R. Elliott, that five buck waving managing editor who started me on my path, opened my first door. Luck? Destiny? Fate? Call it what you like but I was in the right place at the right time. I was a 15 year old geeky kid before being a geek was popular. Prior to finding photography I studied astrophysics and exobiology. Yeah, not just astronomy, the REAL techie stuff.

Chuck wasn't a geek, he was exactly what you imagine an old time editor to be - hard as nails, black coffee drinking, chain smoking, foul mouth cursing, screaming at reporters, stacks of papers everywhere kinda guy. He was a 20 year veteran and had retired as a Senior Master Chief assigned to the US Navy's elite Combat Camera Group just weeks before I walked in his newsroom. In uniform he wore an arm full of gold braid and a chest full of ribbons, but luck was with me because Chuck also had a soft spot for kids - he had five at that time. So rather than hand me my head for bothering him that first day, he offered me an opportunity. Door open.

As my first mentor, Chuck taught me many valuable lessons. Not the least of which was his first lesson - find a mentor because there is always something to learn. His list of advice was this:

1) Find a mentor, then listen to the guidance they give

2) To be a better photographer shut up, put your head down and work hard

3) Awards are nice, but you're only as good as your last picture, so get back to work

4) When you truly have honed your skills and learned your craft, give back to your profession and become a mentor.

5) Be humble. Always.

I've lived by these rules throughout my career, trying to be my best and to honor my dear friend and mentor's memory. Chuck passed away in 1981 at the age of 45, a few months after his sixth child was born.

Over the years I've had several mentors, with each one building on the lessons of the last. Each person was valuable in the advancement of my craft and my self as a person. Without any one of them I would not be who I am today. And I've been fortunate to mentor several others myself, helping, guiding and encouraging them along their own path.

That's what a mentor does.

I'm back from Las Vegas and the annual Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) convention. It was a great trip, networked with lots of photographers from around the country, saw many old friends and learned a lot of new techniques, too. Most importantly it was a wonderful opportunity to recharge, refresh and get uber excited about making images!

The first two days of the trip were spent wandering around Red Rock Canyon and the Valley of Fire. Very exciting places to hike and see images. Tried out a few new tricks, too. Fun stuff. Here are a few of my early picks, including one panoramic image. More to come!

Pittsburgh Wedding Photographer | Hidden Valley Engagement Session | Megan and Mike

Middle of January is not the time most people want an engagement session. Then again, Megan and Mike are not most people. Because they both LOVE winter it was only fitting we made a trip to their snowy retreat in Hidden Valley to create some special images. It was indeed a fun and interesting day! Haven't played (or fallen) in the snow like that in years! As much as we enjoyed our day of play, we're really looking forward to their wedding later this year, when it's a bit warmer!

Depending on where you measure (or stand) here in the North Pittsburgh area we got about 20 inches of snow overnight. Wow. Fourth largest snowfall on record some say.

Yes, it's a mess, a pain and dangerous to drive. So take a walk, look at the world around you like a kid again and have some fun. Go ahead, nobody's looking, toss a few snowballs or better still, drop and make a snow angle : )

I'm a very anal Virgo type person. Think "Monk." Almost. But sometimes I slip and it's nice to be reminded.

Moose Peterson is one of the best, no, Moose is THE best nature photographer working today. Hands down, no comparison. He's also a gifted and giving teacher. His site is a treasure trove of inspiration and education. But the video tutorial series I want to highlight is his very interesting method of cleaning his gear.

Cleaning? Yes, cleaning. Back in the day when cameras were cheap and lenses not really all that expensive many photographers would clean their stuff only when the grime got so bad you could no longer move the controls. Well, that might have worked OK when a new camera body was $400 and a new lens was $200, but now with a new body setting you back $4,000 or more, and a professional quality lens coming in at a cool $2K, it behooves you to take care of your gear. In other words, keep it clean, keep it packed safe and don't abuse those little mini-computers so when the moment is right, your camera will work.

Yesterday's wedding with Katie and Brian was absolutely SICK! We rocked it out by shooting more than 2,500 unique images. It's gonna be a long, hard editing session to bring this one to a reasonable number!

Can you believe it, 52 degree weather in January in Pittsburgh! That was awesome!!!! It doesn't get any better than that, period! The sky was one giant softbox of light. SWEET.

I would be horribly amiss if I didn't mention their insanely beautiful reception site, The Grand Hall at The Priory. Their winter wonderland theme was breathtaking and Walter and his staff was simply THE BEST!

Can't wait to show a great sneak peek but for now one will have to do.

With all the recent technical talk I've done on Facebook it was great to step away from it over the holidays and just see again.

The camera is a tool. Nothing more, nothing less. I can guarantee you, carpenters don't sit around and discuss the finer points of their hammers. They just build stuff.

We, as photographers, should just take pictures.

Chase Jarvis (famous Seattle commercial / fine art photographer) has said it many times, "the best camera is the one you have with you." In other words, it's all about the vision, not the tool. For years fine art photographers have used toy cameras (AKA the Diana and Holga) to create a unique images void of technical mumbo jumbo. Polaroid, too. Enter now, the iPhone, and other smart phones with built in cameras.

Saturday afternoon, needing a visual fix, we ventured out into the world to see. It was a good trip with our eyes wide open. We didn't go to anyplace exotic, just wandered about Connellsville, PA, using our vision and the light as guides. Remembering once again, anyone can buy a camera, but that doesn't mean you have the vision to create images anyone will want. True vision must be nurtured, feed and allowed to grow over years of practice.

I hope you all had a great Holiday and I wish everyone the very best for the New Year!

Wow, that was the fastest Monday I think I've ever seen! Meant to do a blog post all day but just too busy. It's that time of the year. Albums are coming in and going out. Sent out four this afternoon. Two more are awaiting pick up at Post Office tomorrow, err, later today! Still have several more books to design, but alas, they won't be back by Christmas. Still time to get some signature prints done however, thanks to the archival Epson 3800 printer a few feet away from my desk. Several meeting scheduled this week, too. And scouting for a commercial job we're shooting next week. Lot's going on in these last few days of the year.

Pittsburgh Wedding Photographer | Engagement Session | Katie and Brian

Tuesday afternoon I had the pleasure of spending some time with Katie and Brian shooting their get-to-know engagement session around Pittsburgh. It was a dark and gray day and the the light was failing fast, but we were able to hit several locations and pull off a bunch of very cool images. Katie suggested rail road tracks so we headed off to the strip district and my favorite unused spur line. Because they got engaged at the Point they requested some shots there, too. It was really quite dark by the time we got there, but that really worked in our favor and the photos have a beautiful richness thanks to the "magic hour" light... or lack of light as the case was yesterday evening.

Thanks guys for a great night! I hope you enjoyed dinner at Bella Sera Urban Trattoria, too. Can't wait to photograph your wedding in January!

We spent Sunday with Chanelle and Chris doing a "Day After" session.

They were married one month ago today (happy anniversary!!) but because of timing, weather and lack of light we weren't able to make very many casual portraits on their wedding day so a Day After session was a perfect solution. And oh, what a beautiful day we had in Pittsburgh, too!! We started in the Strip and ended downtown a few hours later. It was a great collaboration with everyone suggesting locations.

October 14th was my last wedding of the "season" and I could not have had more fun than with Melissa and Jeff. Their beautiful wedding took place at St. Benedict the Abbot Catholic Church in McMurray. Before the ceremony everything was going fine, Melissa was cool and calm, then Jeff's poem arrived and her tears started. Luckily she regained her composure pretty quickly and the ceremony began soon thereafter.

After the family formals at the church we went out for a few relaxed portraits of the wedding party at a local park. The day was quite chilly but the girls were real troopers, goosebumps not withstanding. The fall colors were in glorious splendor and we capitalized on it for awesome backgrounds. Melissa had a lovely cathedral veil that caught the wind a few times making for some excellent photo opportunities.

Their reception was held at Bella Sera in Canonsburg. At the start of the reception a slide show proceeded Melissa and Jeff's introduction. Looking around the room I noticed a lot of damp eyes as the images of the couple traced the major moments in their life.

Nick Borelli and his crew at Bella Sera did their usual outstanding job of pulling together all the details, including a wonderful late night "Pittsburgh" snack of sandwiches modeled after that famous Pittsburgh place that stacks fries and slaw on the meat, smelts and other hometown goodies.

But the dancing was the thing for the evening and the tunes just kept coming thanks to the excellent DJs, Max Phillips and Dreena Buckholt of Maximum Entertainment.

On a personal note, this was my last wedding working with Nick at Bella Sera as he and his wife are moving to Cleveland. So I must say, my friend, it's been a pleasure and an honor working with you these past three years. May you continue to succeed where ever the road takes you and Sarah. I will see you soon.

And Melissa and Jeff, thank you again for allowing me into your most special day. I will be talking with you very soon!

On Saturday October 17th I had the honor to photograph the wedding of Nancy and Brian at the historic Old Saint Lukes Church in Carnegie, followed by their reception at the beautiful Rosario's Banquet Center, also in Carnegie.

While Nancy was cool and collected early in the day, as the time approached her nerves started to show, just a bit. The ceremony, especially their vows, was very emotional. It was hard for me at times to keep shooting because even my eyes were tearing up.

By the time we went out for some special photos the nerves from earlier turned into pure joy. The weather was a bit on the misty side but Nancy and Brian were troopers and braved the elements. The result was a set of stunning photos filled with love.

It was the first time I had the opportunity to photograph at Rosario's. What a grand hall! The staff was exceptional and reception was delightful. Mark Zini of DJZini kept the party going with a great play list. Mark is one of Pittsburgh's best wedding music professionals.

Seven Springs Autumn Fest | Pittsburgh Photographer | Autumn Splendor

Sunday was the first (and maybe last) day I had available to enjoy the beautiful Pennsylvania autumn so Toni and I trekked up to Seven Springs for their annual Autumn Festival. After walking through the various craft booths (required) and taking a chair lift ride, we took a nice long walk through the woods. Of course for me no walk in autumn would be complete without lugging a camera, lenses and tripod, too. It was a throughly enjoyable time and the resulting photos were quite nice. Here are my three favorites.

For the geek minded, all photos were made with a Canon 5D MK 2 with a 24 - 105 mm F/4 L lens mounted on a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod with a large Manfrotto ball head. ISO was set to 50. Mirror lock-up option enabled. Exposure was about 10 seconds at f/22 for the water shots, 1/40th at f/5.6 for the dock. RAW files were burned, dodged, enhanced and processed exclusively in Lightroom 2. Photoshop was not used.

Mellon Park Engagement - Nicole and Mike

Thursday afternoon I took advantage of the nice weather with a beautiful engagement session for a super cool couple, Nicole and Mike. Originally scheduled for Friday, the weather forecast was quite grim so we switched the dates around, and oh my am I glad we did!

We started in the strip at Klavon's Ice Cream shop for a few retro photos (and a great ice cream treat!). Then we made our way down the strip for some fun shots. We ended the day at Mellon Park in Shadyside. The leaves were in full color and it was glorious!

Tuesday I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with a great couple, AnnaMarie and Brian. Their wedding is next year, but we wanted to do a "get-together session" while the weather was nice and the leaves were at their peak. Friday evening, October 9th, Chanelle and Chris tied the knot at Bella Sera in Canonsburg, PA. A lot of people think of Bella Sera only as the premier reception site in the South Hills, but they also so a number of wedding ceremonies there, too. Nick and his staff did their usual amazing job of turning the room around from wedding to reception without anyone taking notice.

Chanelle and Chris, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your day. I hope you had a great time in Napa! Can't wait to hear all about it. I'll be seeing you soon.

On October 3rd I had the honor to photograph Jill and Bryan's beautiful wedding at St. Sebastian Church in Belle Vernon followed by their reception at Bella Sera in Canonsburg. The church was absolutely stunning and had this great doorway that was a perfect spot to watch the couple exchange their vows. After a few quick portraits it was off to a local park for some very special shots of the newlyweds and their attendants. Bella Sera did their usual outstanding job with Nick and his staff taking care of every minute detail. The food, as always, was out of this world, but that's to be expected from Chef Adam!

Someone asked me, "what's prepping?" Good question! If you don't understand 'photo-speak,' prepping means what you do to get ready for your upcoming shoot -- all the stuff you prepare to be ready for anything and everything. In my case today I'm prepping for a wedding. This is what I did / am doing...

Unpack my primary case of cameras and lenses, clean lenses, check CF cards -- 6-16 gig cards; 8-8 gig cards, check cameras (3 primary, 5D/5DMarkII; 2 back up, 1DMKII), time sync all bodies so the photos can be put later into sequence without tearing out my hair. Put camera batteries on charge. Repack case.

Open lighting case, pull out all gear, pack new umbrellas purchased on Thursday, re-pack all stuff, charge flash batteries, wait, wait, wait for batteries to charge. Charge more batteries. Wait, wait, wait. Pull out all Pocket Wizards and check. Charge batteries.... Pace. Look out window, raining, dang. Think about all the shots I want to take after ceremony. Bring out another camera case and pack more gear -- tilt / shift lenses; super speed lenses, macro lenses. Look out window, not raining. Yeah! Put more batteries on charge. Wait, wait, wait, pace. Quadruple check directions to brides house. Check Google Maps for umpteenth time. Pace. Think about lighting for group shots, reception, etc. Pack stands in car. Charge more batteries (you can never have enough of those things). Add some last minute items to my Bride Emergency Kit (more on that later). Pull change from pocket (don't need change rattling around at a wedding. Toss change in piggy bank. Pace some more. Zip up main camera case after one last check. Zip up secondary camera case. Unzip secondary camera case, add one more item. Re-zip and set in line for packing into car. Charge last four batteries. Check lighting kit. Again. Finally ready for packing in car. Open up all cases, just once more before leaving...

Obsessive? Yeah, it is, but once I leave the studio I'm committed to doing the job with nothing more than I have with me so I must to be as careful (obsessive) as possible not to forget that simple looking widget that could spell the difference between an awesome shot and no shot.

Saturday, 9/26, I had the pleasure of photographing Kate and Nick's beautiful wedding at Bella Sera in Canonsburg. Even though it was raining throughout the day we barely noticed. When the time came for some of those "special shots" we just did em as we could find em, and in a place as beautiful as Bella Sera, that isn't too difficult, if you know where to look.

People talk about trying to find creative ways to photograph rings at weddings. How about keying in on something significant to the bride, groom or their family? It may, or may not, translate to everyone, but to the people truly important it will be a special image. For Cara and Andy I photographed their rings atop TastyCakes, which is very significant to them.

Philadelphia / Overbrook Golf Club Wedding

It's hard to put into words just how incredibly special it was to photograph Cara and Andy's wedding in Philadelphia over the Labor Day weekend. They are two of the most wonderful people I've had the pleasure and honor to photograph in my 30+ in this business. From the moment we met I could fee the chemistry they share and knew right then this was going to be an amazing wedding.

Toni and I arrived Thursday afternoon in time for the rehearsal. Right from the start everyone made us feel like family. On Saturday it seemed I couldn't make photos fast enough because there was SO much beautiful emotion flowing, it was hard to capture it all. And when Cara finally walked down the aisle Andy's expression was priceless -- and captured in vivid detail by Toni, shooting from the church balcony. As they exited the church Andy 'high fived' his way out to his cheering family and friends.

When Cara selected the date of her wedding she did so based on one thing -- The Vincent James Band. She asked what dates they had available and picked the date of her wedding accordingly. I have to say it was a good decision. These guys ROCKED the house! If anyone is getting married in the Philadelphia area, or any area for that matter, you need to check out this band.

After such a mind blowing wedding I wasn't sure if we would be able to keep up the same intensity during our "After Shoot" around Philadelphia on Sunday. But oh my did we ever! Our first stop? Geno's, of course! "Wiz wit," thank you very much! And not a drop spilled on the gown. Good job, Cara!

We would like to thank Cara, Andy and all their family and friends from the bottom of our hearts for such a fabulous weekend and for making us feel like a part of your family. We can't wait to see you again!

Saturday I had the pleasure and honor to photograph Christina and Richard's beautiful wedding day. One could not ask for a better, more incredible day in Pittsburgh in August! Their ceremony was held at Holy Angels Parish in Hays with the reception following at Phipps Conservatory.

Christina and Richard selected Sumer Schmitt of Simply Perfect Weddings to help coordinate their day. And a good choice it was because every tiny detail was absolutely, well, Perfect!

The dinner was created by one of Pittsburgh premier cateries, Rania's Catering. Believe me, the meal was delicious!!

And I cannot forget my good friend Joanne Bartone who graciously worked with me to capture every moment and detail of Christina and Richard's day. Thanks Joanne, it was GREAT to shoot with you!!

Hyeholde Wedding

Saturday, August 1st I had the honor to photograph Hope and Chuck's beautiful wedding at the spectacular Hyeholde in Moon Township. This is one of my all time favorite places in Pittsburgh because of their incredible coordinator, Jeffery Cooper. In a word, he is amazing.

Providing Hope's beautiful bouquet (not to mention really cool paper lanterns) was Chis Puhlman Flowers. Chris even found Hope's favorite flowers -- tulips! In August no less.

Breaking with tradition, and to ensure maximum time with guests, Hope and Chuck requested their photos be made before the ceremony during a"First Look" session. These are always very special because they allow the couple to have a few minutes together to express the emotion each is feeling.

Hope and Chuck, thank you again for allowing me to be a part of your beautiful day. I'll be talking with you soon!

I'm super excited today because I just got word I've been selected to cover an awesome wedding for some very special people in Chicago, IL on May 1st 2010! Looks to be a great year coming up for traveling, I'm also going to Maine for a wedding in July 2010. I LOVE IT!!!!
